Running Time 21:00
In this experimental film the filmmaker explores early childhood memories as well as his experiences illegally crossing the US-Mexican border. Contrasting urban and desert scenes articulate the processes of assimilation and acculturation. Color and black and white images, written words and a surreal and stylish soundtrack come together as a response and critique of mainstream media culture. Umbral is full of metaphoric imagery and brings poetry and the art of filmmaking closer together. The filmmaking process becomes a poetic and personal endeavor. This movie is a vibrant exploration of issues of alienation, land ownership and migration. The film juxtaposes the notions of individual memory and communal history with a highly experimental narrative, while investigating the aesthetics of hand-processed films.
